Crypto, For Canadian Investors

Every Trade Is a Taxable Event.
Most People Find Out Late.

The CRA does not treat crypto as currency. It treats a disposition as a sale, which means swapping one coin for another is a taxable event even though no dollars moved. Here is what counts, what it costs, and what the CRA expects you to have kept.

What The CRA Counts As a Disposition

You have disposed of a crypto-asset, and may have a gain or loss to report, when you do any of the following:

  1. Trade or exchange it for government-issued currency or another type of crypto-asset
  2. Use it to buy goods or services
  3. Transfer ownership of it by way of gift or donation

Moving coins between wallets you own is not a disposition. Quoted from the CRA's guidance on reporting income from crypto-asset transactions.

The part that surprises people

Paying for something with crypto is a barter transaction for income tax purposes, because crypto is not government-issued currency. Buying a coffee with Bitcoin disposes of the Bitcoin at its value that day, and the gain since you bought it is reportable. No dollars ever entered your bank account.

Capital gain or business income

Which one applies changes the tax materially: a capital gain is half-taxable, business income is fully taxable. The CRA weighs these:

  • Frequency of transactions a history of extensive buying and selling
  • Period of ownership held for a short time and turned over quickly
  • Knowledge of the market experience in crypto-asset markets
  • Time spent a substantial part of your time studying the market
  • Financing purchases funded by debt
  • Advertising advertising that you will buy crypto-assets

Records must be kept for six years from the end of the last tax year they relate to. CRA, books and records

Exposure Without Holding Coins

Crypto held inside a TFSA or RRSP is not possible directly, because a crypto-asset is not a qualified investment. Listed miners, exchanges and ETFs are, which is how most Canadians get exposure inside a registered account.

Prices In Canadian Dollars

Quoted in CAD because that is the currency a Canadian gain is computed in, whatever the trade was denominated in.

Where The Rules Come From

Every tax rule on this page is quoted from the CRA's crypto-asset guidance and linked to the page that states it. Nothing here is our interpretation of a rule we could not find.

We Do Not Sell Crypto

No exchange referrals, no affiliate links on this page, and no view on what any coin is worth. We cover the tax and the listed companies.

This Is Not Advice

Crypto tax turns on facts specific to you, particularly whether your activity is a business. A page cannot settle that. A professional can.
